Devlog #2: When the debt outran the casino

Long playtests found a wall in Chapter 2. Here's how we found it, and how Lou's connections are going to fix it.

The High Roller Lounge, a gold and purple room at the top of the casino

Every chapter of Five Finger Jackpot ends with a payoff: you clear your uncle’s debt to Big Lou, and the next, much bigger debt lands on your desk. That’s the fun of an incremental game. The numbers get huge, and so does your casino.

The catch is that both sides have to grow at the right speed. This week we found out ours didn’t.

How we test pacing

Before anything ships we run long playtests of every chapter, played three ways:

  • Sharp: playing as efficiently as possible.
  • Average: a steady, sensible pace.
  • Casual: relaxed play, no min-maxing.

Chapter 1 came in at about 45 minutes for sharp play, which matches our own best runs. Good sign.

Chapter 2 did not. Each chapter’s debt is far bigger than the last, and the casino simply couldn’t grow fast enough to keep up. Even sharp play would have taken months to pay off Chapter 2. That’s not a challenge, it’s a wall.

The fix: Lou’s connections

Lou knows people. Now, every chapter you pay off brings his connections into play, and they multiply every payout in the casino: every machine, every table, every jackpot. Clearing a debt doesn’t just unlock the next one; it makes your whole operation stronger for it.

You’ll always be able to see where you stand:

  • The Lou page and the payoff screen show how big the boost is.
  • The VIP Lounge shows your current boost right next to your Golden Chips.

Where we’re aiming

The exact boost is still being tuned. Our targets for a sharp player:

Chapter Target
Chapter 1 about 1 hour
Chapter 2 about 2 hours
Chapter 3 about 3 hours

Slower, more relaxed play will take longer, and that’s fine. Machines keep earning while you’re away, and the debt is a goal, not a stopwatch.

We’ll share more once the numbers settle. In the meantime, get the launch alert and you’ll hear as soon as the Steam page is up.
