Devlog #1: Why your cursor has five fingers

How a running joke about a loan shark became the game's main timer, and how we tuned it so it stays funny instead of frustrating.

A POOF cloud on the casino floor as Lou's crew takes a finger

Incremental games are great at “number go up”. They’re less good at giving you a reason to care when the number goes up. We wanted a goal with a little pressure behind it. So we gave you a loan shark.

The hand is the meter

In Five Finger Jackpot your mouse cursor is a cartoon hand. For every hour of play without a payment to Big Lou, his crew pays a visit and the hand loses a finger: a bandage, a puff of smoke, and a slightly sadder cursor. Each missing finger lowers your manual spin payouts a little.

The Lou button in the top bar shows the same hand, how much of the debt you’ve paid, and the countdown to his next visit. It wiggles red in the last ten minutes. On mobile, where there’s no cursor, that button carries the whole joke.

Keeping it fun

A punishment mechanic in a relaxing game is risky, so we set some rules:

  • Everyone sees it once. Chapter 1 has one scripted visit early on, so every player learns how it works. Lou then “feels bad” and gives you a longer window.
  • Small payments count. Any real payment resets the timer, so you don’t need the whole debt, just a good-faith effort.
  • There’s a floor. After three fingers, Lou stops. (“You DO have a second hand.”)
  • There’s a carrot too. On-time payments build a good-standing streak that boosts all payouts.

The target: a running gag that nudges you, not a wall.
